I purchased a new ammeter, light switch and cutoff switch from Yesterday's Tractor and installed them according to the wiring diagram attached. Blew the lights and the meter is at max discharge as soon as I started it. Anyone have any idea what I did wrong...?

did you see that the diagram is showing positive ground system, not negative ground?

or maybe swap wires on amp meter, it should jump to charging side at start up, then drop if batterie is fully charged

The only way to blow the lights is to over voltage them, such as 6 volt bulbs ane a 12 volt battery.

Battery voltage greater than 6 volts especially 12 volts is hard on lamps. Wrong battery polarity without flashing the generator can cause a large current to the generator to fry the cutout and possibly the generator.Whatever battery you put in next should be a three cell 6 volt battery and before you start the engine follow the operator's manual instructions on flashing the generator.

Also, WATCH THEM AFTERMARKET 3 POSITION SWITCHES!! THEY DON'T FIT IN THE INSTRUMENT PANELS WELL! THEY GROUND OUT ON THE INSIDE OF THE PANEL. I've seen it so many times. When they short out, BOOM things blow! Check it out... Steve@B&B

I made sure the three position switch isn't grounded, yes its pos grnd, have no idea what you mean by flashing the generator. The ammeter is connected exactly as the diagram shows. Weird thing is the hi/low doesn't change the ammeter reading (max discharge) even when I reversed it. Going to get new bulbs tomorrow, but I checked the sockets with a meter and they show 6 volts. Battery is a 6v from auto store. Maybe a new regulator and different switch? Any reliable sources for switches? Or how to test it? Nothing is grounding, all wires are new.

Flashing sets the generator polarity to match the battery. Its needed when the generator has been operated in a test shop and when the tractor hasn't been run in a long time.
Basically connect the battery and A terminals on the cutout or regulator for a few seconds to leave the proper polarity residual magnetism in the field poles so it builds voltage in the proper polarity. Wrong polarity can have already fried the contacts in the cutout.

I cut all the wires about a year ago since nothing worked. Just jumped it as necessary. Should I disconnect the "A" from the reguator to the starter before connecting the battery?

Mike, If you wanted to upgrade that 6V system, you can loose the cutout relay and put a Voltage Regulator in its place. This would eliminate the charging side of the Headlight switch. If you go that way, take the number off the Gennie and have a local rebuilder mate a VR to that Gennie. This way your getting a VR that matches the Generator. I can tell ya how to wire it in. We have a wall full of VR's so I could help you to if you don't have somebody local. ...

Like Steve said check the wires, switch terminals are not grounded to the side or back of the instrument panel or batt box and ground the instrument box to the batt box with a #10 screw in the lower left side of the panel to batt box. One more thing, them P.O.S. china switches are junk!
