High on my list of wants for quite some time has been just the right D15 and this one fit my needs perfectly. Nice enough to show off yet can put it to work with out worry of scratch.  It does all the important stuff correctly, only need minor tinkering which is already underway.

That's a very nice/original tractor. No need to paint, just like you say. It's too bad those decals always fade so bad.

It's an old repaint and looks like they taped around the OEM decals.
Ya on the handy part, I will suit my needs perfectly, pull the brush hog and firewood trailers.  Dad had a D15 new thus my lust for one instead of a 14 that can be purchased much cheaper. This one had all the wants, NF, 3 point, close to home, doesnt need any major work.

Nice find Butch. I looked for several years trying to find a 15 with 3 point or even a 160 . I gave up when this Massey 230 that had been completely gone thru went up for sale locally. It ain't Orange but has the same engine as the 160 Big smile

Butch, one of my favorites. Big enough to do a lot and small and nimble. The only weak point is their 3 point hitch. Pretty light for the horsepower. Tracy

Ya Larry we are all moved and cozy comfy at the new place. The barn behind the tractor is the new shop, as you can see nothing large will fit in the door,, that is by designWink.

Butch - just how long is this mid-life crisis going to continue?   Just in last few years it was a Two-Twenty, then a 185, now a D15.  Big smile  Anyway looks great!   I want a NF D-series again too but wishing and getting are not the same.   I like yours in that it is original but I'd be tempted to throw on some new hood decals.   Mike

If you plan on using a 3pt brush hog (or any serious 3pt work) keep a wrench handy for the bottom 4 bolts. The least bit loose and you'll be looking for new housings.

If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.

Paul, there is already some indications of that happening. When it gets cold that bracket is coming off and be doing so.e repairs under there.

Steel needs paint, I will vote tomorrow that you repaint it. So I saw a wide front D15 at the Colchester GOTO. I wanted it. Nice size for smaller work.

Too bad about the 3pt hitch potential problem, yes keep on top of that.  Any fix? Would studs and nuts hold better?  What a bad day to have the cast housing pop out the threads or worse.

I have an observation, three tractors were mentioned in this thread D15, 160 and MF230. Since it is a slow day, I looked at the stats from tractordata.com link to Nebraska tests.
The D15 has wheelbase of 87", no ballast weight of 3985, ballasted weight of 7481
The 160 has  wheelbase of 76", no ballast weight of 4680, ballasted weight of 6070
The MF230 has wheelbase of 72", no ballast weight of 4000, ballasted weight of 5110
This is what they ballasted the machine for the tests, I assume the manufacturer had input in that value.

The D15 has 3500 pounds of ballast! It went from being the lightest to the heaviest.
They almost doubled the weight of the machine. So what, the longer the wheelbase, the more relative ballast you can add?  Is wheelbase a factor in implement handling.

Butch,
That is a good looking tractor. Humm...., reminds me of something, just a size bigger!:)
I think your going to like it a lot. Especially since you had one in the family too.
Looking forward to it doing some chores.
Regards,
 Chris

The only real fix is to throw the 3pt on the scrap pile where it belongs and get all of the Snap-Coupler parts. I've even seen ones that have studs break the housings. The Snap-Coupler uses more bolts and spreads the loads beyond everything on just those four. Of all the things the AC engineers did so well, they sure screwed up on the 3pt hitches on the smaller tractors. For a good 3pt you need to have a D17IV or newer or larger tractor.

Butch I have thot for a long time that the D15 series II is the best looking of the D tractors.    As for the three point bolt issue my thots are that as good a mechanic as you are I'll bet you will spend time looking it over and come up with a retro fit that will be far better than the factory setup.    Mark

Thanks again Paul I can see the weakness in the set up as it is hard to find one in decent shape.  I will get it off over the winter and see whats what under there. There is some extra braces welded up to the fender mounts so I hope they did that prior to it messing up the castings. My brush hog is a pull type, I just want to haul a carrier around, fine grade the drive, might dig couple post holes.  We have excavating equipment to move dirt when need be and dont need to use tractors for bulldozers.

Nice find for sure and the overall combination most sought after in my opinion.
Check for any heli-coil inserts in the bottom of the rear housing. Not the heaviest 3-pt. but keep eyes on all fasteners while not overdoing it on implements and she should be fine. Still my favorite and the unit I reach for most on my place is one of the three D15II's, albeit the one with SC and OEM adaptor.
