I have solved an oil leak, timing issue and cooling issue all in the last week. Thanks to this forum for all the help.
Next issue up is..... I am not getting any charge from the generator. My brand new ammeter gauge is running in the deep negative. I don't know if it was charging when I got the tractor because the gauges were all broken and I ran it very little. I have a brand new regulator on it and I rewired everything. I am pretty sure the wiring is all correct so I want to start in the obvious place by checking to see if the generator is sending juice out. I have a nice multi-tester which I don't know how to use well so can someone get me going in the right direction?
Thanks,
Jeff

Probably charging. flip the wires on the meter. Positive ground.

I am pretty sure I have wires where the manual says but that whole positive ground thing freaks me out. I will check and see if I am getting juice out of the generator. If I am I think swapping the wires would be the answer.
Thanks,
Jeff

Put that voltmeter across the battery as it sits without the engine running and read the voltage. Start it up. If it's charging you will have more voltage and you just need to reverse the wires to the meter. If it reads less then you know the meter is wired correct and you may have a real charging issue.

The ammeter connections have to be swapped when changing the battery polarity AND the generator has to be flashed to get it to generate the new polarity. Not flashing the generator can fry the regulator cutout section.
Ammeter test. Without the engine running turn on lights and ignition. Should show discharge if the polarity is correct. After flashing the generator the charging (not necessarily at low engine speed) should show the other direction on the ammeter.
Flashing, connect the battery and armature terminals on the regulator for a few seconds before starting the engine.
If still 6 volts, the battery will run about 6 volts setting, and should charge up to about 7.2 volts at full charge.

Gerald, what do you mean by "changing polarity". I don't think I am doing that.

Are you still positive ground like the tractor was shipped? If the battery is that, then the + terminal on the ammeter goes to the battery and the - terminal to the ignition switch and the battery terminal on the regulator. A generator tested in a generator shop needs to be flashed on the tractor to keep from blowing the cutout section of the regulator before its run the first time to give the generator the proper residual magnetism to build voltage in the proper polarity. The generator works fine with nothing but changing that residual for either battery polarity.
On of the tests for generator connections is to take off the belt and with the field connection grounded short the battery and armature posts on the regulator. The generator should run like a motor, and if you open that ground on the field connection it should slow down but still run. Also tests generator brushes and field connections.

You can also tell if the genny is putting out by jumping the field at the genny to ground. The genny should charge full at that point. LOL Bob
