Ok, stumbled onto this 840B AC loader on the GSA auction website. We don't have any of this industrial AC line. But we thought we better get started, cause there disappearing.  So after some complimentary bidding (surprised no one else saw it and reported it) We were the successful bidder. We made the 2 hour 15 min drive to Willows, Ca. US FISH and WILD LIFE SERVICE to retrieve it. It was a really nice rainy day and it went like this.

So the story goes that they acquired this loader when they acquired some property. It appears it was US NAVY originally. They got it running and used it. Then it got parked and the engine is seized again. photo PA280063_zpsqqavynqg.jpg
So that was yesterday. We unloaded it today.

Yes, 2800 AC (no turbo). The first 840s had perkins. We have a spare running 2900 (turbo 2800) that was for a 545 loader. We could turbo up and make it a 940. The plan is to get into this one and see what it might need first.

Nice addition, glad they didn't knock a hole in the block to make it unusable.  Done anything with the two big crawlers you bought at the auction with the holes in them?

John, you're right about that hole in the block thing.The GSA people (FEDS) have a blurb in there notice about it might have to be CARB compliant. I think they were sure we would be doing that hole in the block thing for them (LOL) I'll guarantee it's safe now.

 We haven't done anything with the 2 HD16s with the holes in the block. I do occasionally show them to friends and interested AC people to watch there blood boil like every one on the forum did. We will probably disassemble both engines for parts. We picked up another HD16 like those that does not run (but does not have a hole in the block). We also had a 17000 power unit donated to us that needs a turbo. That engine could be used in 16s or 21s.So we have lots of places to use those parts.

I am always impressed with Mel and his family and the lengths they go to when saving some of there prizes.


But for shear determination a Cat collector in Petaluma Ca has gone even farther picking up 3 Cat D9's. The frame that supported the engine and tracks had all been cut so no rolling them on a truck,as well as the whole in the engine. Was so much work to move the scrap guys didn't want to deal with them,so they where cheap. Had them welded together to roll on a lowboy trailer.

I would say no, they didn't seem very popular in Ca.  This is the first 840 I think I've seen. We had a friend that had a 940 that he brought from logging in Wyoming. I'm sure there were some around though. They also came along about the time AC became Fiat and the wind went out of there sail.

I've seen a couple of the 840's sell at auctions around here, don't remember how much anymore! nice save!

Mel,

Back in July you posted that you were coming up to Oregon to look at a feller/buncher to do some logging.  No pictures so I'd guess it didn't happen or you have been extra busy.
