Hey Harold, that's a good idea, but in my humble opinion a tribute to AC should be secondary to the sentiment of the actual holiday--Honoring those who gave their lives for our country.

I am hesitant to post this reply, as my emotions are running high.  I just heard a Lowes commercial that said "memorial day is about getting projects done and spending time with families".  To me, that struck a nerve.

As a career Soldier, my perspective is obviously biased.  As for me, my wife and four children, we will repeat the ritual we have performed the last few years.  I will lower the flag to half-mast at sunrise and we will make the trek to the Fort Campbell memorial grove.  Once there, we will clean the bird poop off the black granite 716th Military Police Battalion memorial marker.  I will tell them about the people behind three of the names, my friends LTC Kim Orlando, SSG Joseph Bellavia and SGT Sean Grilley.  I will tell them why I will never forget the sacrifice they made in October of 2003 on that street in Karbala, Iraq.  I will tell them of the friends in other units I've left behind in Afghanistan and again in my second tour in Iraq and why their names are not on this memorial as they were in other units.

Once all that is done, we should get back to the farm in order to raise the flag at noon.  Then, I will hop on the B to play and spend time with the family and do projects.  All of that takes place once the real reason is done.  Heck, even I wouldn't be against planting some flowers then!

I hope this doesn't come across wrong, I just want to share my thoughts!

In Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

What Ryan said!

But not to put it down, Leonard-- I think there should be a holiday specifically for the days when we bleed orange.

On a strange side-note, there were many Allis machines that, with soldiers at the controls, helped turn the tide.

I think my afternoon activity will include flying the flag FROM the tractor.
