Hi All!
My D17, as it came to me, was fitted with a 12v battery, positive ground. All but one lamp was still functioning when I got it, the one I replaced was a 12v bulb, and it has a 12v coil, so I'm assuming this one was fairly-properly-converted... but I don't trust the previous ownership any farther than I can throw 'em, as it is obviously not regulating... still has the original D-R generator from what I can tell (all factory wiring in place).
Can anyone rattle off the ORIGINAL part number for the correct (6v) regulator, and a suitable part number for whatever would commonly be used for a 12v replacement?
When converting these buggers, is it common practice to convert to negative ground as well?

Dave is if it's 12 volt and a generator, any generic 12 volt regulator that will bolt up under the gas tank should work fine. I still have my D17 Series IV configured as 12 volt positive ground with a generator and a generic regulator worked perfect for me. Mike

Sorry I can't rattle off the regulator P/N. I would recommend buying the best one you can find as the cheapies are more aggravation than they're worth. I have even gone to the extreme of prowling ebay for NOS Delco units for my personal stash.
D17's were 12V positive ground from the factory. Installation of an Alternator or Solid State electronics (radio, planter monitor, etc) would necessitate conversion to negative ground, otherwise I'd leave it alone. If you convert to negative ground, be sure to swap the connections on the ignition coil. It does make a difference!
