When mowing today in tall grass, up hill, I could here my valves rattle some. Seems to loose power also to some extent. Could carbon on the heads cause this? If not what could cause the loss of power? Thanks Tracy

would not be suprized if that was not the case i think they seem to run kind of rich , when i got my 616 it would not turn over because the carbon was built up and would not go past tdc.

May be wrong but I'ld lean more toward timing, it has a tendency to move if not tightened real tight. Just my $.02

I thought timing might be off a smidge. My points box needs replacing. I can't hardly keep the gap adjusted because of stripped screw. Have a nut on back but it is a bear to get to if engine is hot. Thanks Tracy

Is the bolt stripped or the box? assuming the box. Brenda at Sandy lake got me one. I had the same problem. Doesn't come loose now. If you have access to non ethanol fuel use it. These old engines need the added lubricants and they run cooler. You probably already know that but I wanted to throw that in as well. And unfortantly, they run rich which builds up carbon quicker. Some Seafoam in the fuel ever so often helps keep the valves, rings, and head clean. It's amazing stuff and I swear by it. I should have been their lead salesman. lol.

I fiddled with it and it runs much better. Still is a tired old engine. I only run non ethanol in all my engines,saws and trimmers. Doesn't idle down well but cuts like a maniac! Be nice if somebody made a new like it!

mine is like that too, kinda of a dog,i have adjusted points ,new points adjusted timing,doesnt really help, I just live with it.
