I don't have a 554XL, but I work in sales at a Vermeer dealer. If it actually has the monitor with screen then it's probably an "Accu-Tie Plus" monitor. Technically the "Accu-Tie" was just an auto-tie control box without a screen. If it has the screen then it should show several different things. In the upper left hand corner is the bale size/target bale size indicator. Before the bale hits 36 inches it will read "--/60" or whatever you set the target bale size to. Once it hits 36" it will begin to read the size and change as the bale grows for example "39/60","40/60",41/60" etc. Once the bale gets within 6" of target size then you get an "early warning" alarm from the monitor so you can be sure to finish the bale off well. Once it hits the target bale size you'll get a second alarm that tells you it's time to stop and let the bale tie. Screen also shows "Tailgate Open/Closed", "Net or Twine", and it it has "Bale Shape Indication" on the baler then it will show how the bale is forming on the right and left. The monitor will also display a "field" count if you bother to reset the count between fields/years etc. and also displays a total lifetime count. The buttons around the screen allow you to change the settings for twine wraps, start wraps, end wraps, center wraps, etc. Adjust amount of net wraps (3, 3.5, 4 etc). Pretty much all settings are easy to get to and adjust. I will attach a picture of the "Accu-Bale" monitor that should be pretty similar to the "Accu-Tie Plus" monitor that a 554XL baler should have. All in all the XL balers were pretty good. If someone took care of it and you have a decent Vermeer dealer around then I wouldn't be afraid of it. Hopefully this helps you out.

It is a pretty automatic system for sure. just stop forward motion when the second alarm sounds and it puts the twine or wrap on. I like mine.
