The first picture is on one that needs some repair where the shifter stick ball works and I will follow that with a picture of one that is not real bad. Would not be your problem but would need repair.

Pictures of the forks below. These forks look to be in good shape. I pulled these out of a couple of transmissions in the shed a little bit ago. They have been laying around for several years and I have no idea which tractors they were removed from or how they worked at the time I removed them. Several with the side plates removed but didn't run across them in plain site.

This is a picture of the slide gears with the grooves that the forks have to enter over and in.

When it pops out of gear it would have to move the one fork off the ident on the shaft which takes quite a bit of force. The ident ball spring would have to be bad or the gear would have to show signs of bad wear to over come the ident. You should be able to tell easy which after removing the side plate. I have not seen any bad gears in any of the transmissions that I have been into which is not many compared to the amount that were used for close to 70 years or more.

DickL, when I got in there, 1st/rev gear was tight on the shaft. Got if free, but cracked the plate when putting it back together. However, something is still locked up and since the engine is seized I think the clutch may be stuck also. I picked this up for donor parts, and I don't intend to use the rear, it would just make it easier to move around.
