Hi,

I hope you are all well.  I have a fairly basic question.  I bought a B10 that apparently was running 15yrs ago before indoor storage.  After putting a new battery, plug, gas and oil, it spin well but there is no fire.  I know I should go check the points but before doing so, is there a kill switch that I should know about?

Here is a picture of the beast.

Thanks

Welcome aboard! The keyswitch is your killswitch. There are no safety switches on this tractor.

Those engines are notorious for being mouse condos. If it sat for any length of time its possible mice have gotten under the blower housing and chewed through the plug wire.

A little spritz of TV tuner cleaner or Brakekleen on the points, and the ole' girl will probably fire right up! Aaron is right about those darn varmits. They get into everything, especially small engine flywheel housings! Probably wouldn't be a bad idea to pull the engine and remove the housing to make sure there isn't any varmit condo's in there. Could make a mess if there is. Welcome aboard! BTW, nice machine!

If you pull the engine, I have a tip for the removal of the drive shaft bolts. Use a long pry bar or screw driver to hold the drive shaft from turning and break both bolts loose that are bolted to the flywheel. Then run them out. Hang onto the spacers, they can be a booger to find if you drop them. Also a good time to check the starter/generator belt. Driveshaft has to come off to change it anyway.

Thank you for the welcome and the great information. Everything is very appreciated.

I will make sure to keep this page posted.

In the meantime, here is my dash.  Some people think there might have been a hour meter at one point.  Also some more pictures.  Sad for the hood that someone changed the gas tank and made a second hole!

You can pick up a lot of parts on e-bay. There's a nice hood on there right now pretty darn reasonable in my opinion. I just bought a nice clean deck and fenders pretty reasonable for my Big 10. The same guy I bought the deck and fenders from is selling the hood. Ya just gotta' look around if you want to restore it correctly. I believe the same guy has the fuel tank also. He's parting out a Big 10...

I had a little time to look at the tractor and noticed that the metal box for the points had no seal.  After looking closely, the condensor's top rubber is crack and points are a bit rusty.  I think the spark issue might be in the points. I will try finding a replacement.

I would be happy if this works because removing the engine to access the magneto wires seems to be quite a job!

Before buying any parts use a piece of very fine sandpaper or Emery cloth and draw it between the points when they are lightly closed a time or 3. Every set of points I've ever failed to get spark from was remedied in this way. I don't think I've ever bought points and condenser for an old Briggs and wound up using them.
