Ok. My church has an old 17 that has a finish mower on the back. So we got it going and looked at the tach to see how fast to run it and it isn't working. I took off the cable and it is in one piece but the end that goes into the tach drive is off and it looks to be stuck in the drive area. Guessing here as I don't know much about them but this is what it looks like to me and I am mechanically knowledgeable. Is there anyone who has a blowup of the dirve as it comes apart? It looks as if you would just take the drive off with a large wrench and then replace the cable end or replace the whole cable. Thanks for any help.

If you can get the part out of the drive end by the distributor, and the sleeve is still in good shape, you can have a new cable made up for it.  That's what I did on my D17 and found a local speedometer shop that works on mechanical speedos make me one up.  It cost me 12.60 plus the time to take it down there.   If you want, I can send you their info, they are in Milwaukee, WI.

Hey thanks for the reply. I thought that I could get that out and put a new one in. I have a new cable, I just have toget a look at the end to make sure it is right. Can I just take the fitting off that the cable threads onto? This may need to happen as I am not sure how I am going to get the broken piece out. But I will try before going through the worry of something else breaking when I do that. Thanks again.

I replaced the tach/cable on my D17 last week.  I bought an aftermarket tach online for about 60 bucks.  When I hooked it up to my old cable, nothing happened.  I took off the old cable and it was seized.  Went to Autozone and bougt a replacement (it was about 6" longer than factory) for about 12 bucks.  It's held in place in the distributor housing with a 1/16 woodruff key.  The other end goes in your tach and is held in place with a nut.  Pretty easy, really.

Ok here is a picture of the tach drive on what I believe is a WD 17. I want to take apart the flange looking part that the tach cable screws onto. I think the end of the cable is stuck in the drive. You can see the round sleeve looking thing that I think is part of the cable in the drive. Then there is a picture of the area that the drive is at which is under the distributor. And finally a picture of the tractor that I am working on. I appreciate any help in making sure I am asking about the right tractor and any help you can give me on the tach problem.

Shags, it looks like a D17, no W in front of the D. You don't need the tach to run the PTO for mowing. Run it 3/4 to full throttle for mowing. You can't run it too fast if the governor is working. I looked through my collection of PDF files but could not find a drawing of the distributor driven tach.

Hey thanks a lot. I now know at least what to call it for sure. I am probably goint to try and get this thing working anyway as I don't know if the thing is running at all near the top rpm. Sounds to me like it is way too low at full throttle but what do I know. Looks like the tach only shows 2000 rpm. Has there been any problems with taking this thing apart like the housing breaking when you take the outer flange piece off? Really the only thing that I am worried about when I think about taking it apart. Thanks again.
