I have a b head that is leaking water into the crankcase . Someone said that the heads were prome to cracks . If this is true were would the weak spot be at . or would it have to be tested to find ? hate to put a new head gasket on and find out its a broken head. I do know that its is coming from the top end and is not the block or o-rings . thanks

Naw! Someone gave you a bum steer. Very few of those heads ever cracked. I would bet you will find you water leak under the rockerms in the core plugs. They are pron to rusting thru and having pin holes that drive people crazy trying to find the leak.

Someone will post a good picture of where to look very soon. If they don't I can take time after work this evening.

Thanks Dick I have checked the soft plugs but like you say pretty hard to find a pin hole and seams to be a pretty good amount coming into the oil leading me to believe something more than a head gasket . Sometimes well most of the time I look to hard and make things bigger than they are . Probly should just put the head on and try it .

you could always purchase a sheet of fibrous gasket material such as garlock cut out a head gasket just only punch the head bolts . then make some solid gaskets for the water outlets all but one. once the head is fairly torqued flat to the block with the gaskets with no ports for the water to flow . fill the head with some water then put some air pressure around 14 to 15 psi . This should give some indication of a leak and where it is even if its a cracked head ,.

If you have the head off, you should be able to tell if the head gasket was leaking by looking at the gasket,block and head. Check surfaces for flatness. I would replace the 2 dollar core plugs before putting the head back on also.

A bad head gasket can let a lot of water into the oil. When the head is removed you normally can see the path the water was taking. Rather than torquing the head all the way you can torque it to 40 foot pounds and fill it with water and put a little pressure on the system to see where the water is coming from. (5 to 7 pounds of pressure will be enough) That will be plenty to check for water and will not crush the gasket to where you wouldn't be able to reuse it. Just don't use glue on the gasket. I never glue a fiber head gasket anyway.
