Just discovered this tractor this afternoon at a used tractor sales lot. What's it worth? I doubt if I would get a flat tire bushhogging a patch of thorns with this one. Are these factory wheels?

I'm not an expert, but they don't look factory. Looks like they welded channel iron to the hubs.

They'd be okay in a plowed field, but would be a rough ride on a gravel road! LOL! I've never seen or heard of a D17 on steel before personally...I think they're homemade. If so,they did do a good job of fabricating them though. Rick

I don't know if it is factory or not,but I do like the Idea of being able to bush hog thorn bushes and not get a flat.Don't think the road commisioner or nieghbors would be happy with me running it up and down the road.

Amish. Plenty of them around here. Neighbors have a WD-9 McCormick, another has a 4020 JD, and I've seen a 4030 maroon belly(?) and D-19 AC all on steel wheels. Most are shop built like those are. If they were River Brothern Mennonite wheels they would be better built.

Amish wheels. Most Mennonite's have rubber pads on steel, by us. I guarantee that dealer has been asked about selling just the wheels off of that machine. Mennonite down the road has a JD 4455 on steel duals and a 1460 combine on metal tracks. There is an Amish with a AC 185 on steel also.

I would not want a tractor that spent it's whole life on steel. I have had Continental U's with steel and with rubber and you can't believe how hard the steel is on the old tractors. It just wears them out! Dave.

I cannot believe what I learn on this forum. I have NEVER SEEN OR HEARD of a D-17 or any other late tractor on Steel. Have to put this down for something new I learned today.
Yes, I have seen the Amish pulling a bailer with three horses and an engine on the bailer to run it but never have heard of putting steel on a relatively late model tractor.
Good Luck!

I saw a late model JD in western Ky driving on the edge of the road on steel. Me and the guy with me just looked at each other like "what was that". JP

Here is a picture of a 200 and a 715C backhoe that I took in PA last fall. The owner is Amish.

The Amish around here use tires. See them from time to time running up and down the road in their "Amish convertibles".

The Amish live by a set of religious beliefs that (usually) prohibit the use of gasoline powered gear rolling on rubber. I have seen horse-drawn balers with the Wisconsin engine but never a tractor, even on steel. Latter would be more likely with Mennonites whose beliefs are more liberal. Amish practices vary some from location to location as the local religious leader has considerable leeway to establish the rules in his location.

I have seen a lot of steel wheels around here with rubber cushions built in, 3-4 inch diameter and 3-4 inches thick kept in place with steel all around

When I worked parts at a CaseIH dealer the parts microfiche showed steel wheels for a 706 right from IH. The Amish around here (meaning 45 mile to the SE of me, there are none near by) use just horses mostly although I was at an auction that had an old Allis mounted on skids once. I think it was an A or U. That was 20 plus years ago but I don't remember what it sold for. I'm sure it went cheap. They used it to belt power a feed mill and other things. There are Hutterites 10 miles to the south of me that use all modern equipment but live on a commune. They manufacture stainless steel products.

Walt , I would like to see a steel wheeled lawn tractor. I bet it would not be kind to a lawn. Amazing how people rationalize their beliefs.

rich I too have seen steel wheeled lawn mowers. They are not what you are thinking of as steel wheels. There are no steel lugs and they are covered with a hard rubber. They look almost like some skid steer hard rubber tires I've seen.

Looks like Roberts is parting out this D17. Saw engine and wheels advertized. Roberts always wants market value plus 50% for his parts. I can't imagine how he stays in business.

It never siezes to amaze me what the amish will come up with. We live next to the l2nd largest settlement of them (right behind Lancaster PA) and they always "interpet" the beliefs to fit them. No electric, but we put services into "freezer barns" that they rent out, cell phones, texting, etc. We even have a buggy that comes by with a stereo in it blasting Lady Ga Ga. There are a couple guys that make the steel for anything. The largest I have seen around here is a 7600 4WD JD

A few years back, I saw a 730 JD diesel that had no wheels and was mounted on a skid near Hazleton Ia.
