Why can't you use liners on segments. Cut them in half where the segments end

You can.  I just thought it was kinda silly to cast liners to weld onto replaceable segments when that is why the were designed :  to bolt on new segments not have to weld on rings like the old style.  why not cast it as an oem match?

Liners or cups can be welded in , yet if the sprocket teeth are worn heavily I would question getting them into proper position so as to contact bushing outer surface.
Seen some attempts at repairing worn sprockets and it seems more trouble that it's worth .
I built up top surface on a set of HD5 track welding first with 7018 rod and then a hard surface rod over that - I got about 2 years of life out of the job but ended up replacing sprocket as well as track - I welded on sprocket rings onto old spokes >
On my D6 I welded new rings onto spokes to take D5 segmented sprockets - then the rest of machine self destructed before I could get my investment back in the tracks .

Conversion to what is available, finding a sprocket of similar diameter in a other make machine and converting the entire undercarriage to that machine series.  Idlers can be converted, roller frames re-drilled for different mountings, sprocket ring can be replaced with a different make on the old spokes.  Been done to other machines and shown on here.

I have that issue with my old 7G, it uses 7" pitch that no one else uses today, IHC did thru the Dresser machines but even they are all gone.  So I have a set of spare rails I will use up and either make the attempt to convert or give the old machine up.
