After about 2 weeks of beating banging and heating I was finally able to get the hydro cyd. pins out and have a clear shot at trying to remove the upper and lower brake pins. The IT manual says to just pry out the  upper pin and use a slide hammer on the lower. After 2 weeks of kroil and hammering and prying I was able to get the upper part of the brake bands to slide back and forth with miminal force. Just today I was able to get the lower pivot point to move with the help of hammers and pry bars. I can't believe a slide hammer will pull out the lower pin. Any special tool for the upper pin as you can't get behind it to drive it out. Also broke of the brake activating lever at the pivot point just to raise this challenge!     I HATE RUST!    Just had to vent about a poor brake design on a maintenance item.

Slide hammers work much better than one would think.  Numerous light blows are often better than heavy pounding.

I've made 2 slide hammers...one to get that same pin out of my D17SIV, and one for getting in behind a blind-hole bushing.  For the bushing puller, I made a special hook jaw that caught inside the small space behind the bushing.  It screwed onto the end of a 1/2" piece of drill-rod.  Capped off the opposite end and used a surplus wrist pin as the sliding weight.
