I put a pressure gauge teed into the line that goes in the front support near the steering shaft. I didn't think I had much assist in steering. The gauge will read 2-300 psi not turning steering wheel. If you turn to the lock, the gauge will peg. Anybody ever done that? Is that sound normal? One of the first D17 gas tractors.

2-300# seems like an awful lot of fluctuation,,,?? I'm not familiar with the D17 pumps, but if it is a gear pump, being a Positive Displacement pump, and in good health, they will peg out when moved to lock and if kept there for very long will tear up something.
The discharge pressure fluctuating like that may indicate bypassing in the gears or a relief valve bouncing,,,,, hope this helps,,,,

Is that the discharge port? By where the shaft goes in? I put a 301 diesel in tractor so don't have pump by distributor. I am using a priority valve to supply oil to steering. That may well be the problem if I am putting oil in the wrong direction.

The "power-assist" style steering had a 1200 or 1600 PSI relief valve on the original pump. How much pressure that is developed is determined on how much resistance there is at the front wheels. It will take more sitting still in mud, that it would rolling along on concrete. With a "301" engine, it would take more because of the extra weight. I see nothing wrong with some pressure being developed doing nothing. A larger GPM pump that stock GPM would do that. The original pump was around 8 GPM at full throttle.
