I'm looking at a 917H. Any problems with them to look out for? Looks to be in decent shape

The large frame Allis and Simplicity garden tractors were a great machine and there are many with lots of life left in them. Still an AC 917 is at least 30 years old so the common wear points could have problems. The rear axle tubes can crack, especially on the RH side. (Of the 25+ units I have had I only had one I knew to be cracked) The bevel gear box could be worn. Rotate the pulley on the RH side of the gear box and if it rotates much before you feel the gears engage then there may be a lot of wear. It should move less than 1/4" at the outside edge of the pulley if everything is still good and tight. Also the engine could still be a Kohler KT17 series I. They ran good on flat ground but were especially undesirable on slopes. If its a series II they are a better engine with pressurized lubrication to the rod journals but still can have an oiling issue with running sideway on a slope.

Here is a series of videos pertaining to inspecting Allis/Simplicity garden tractors. These are earlier models but most of the principles for the gearbox and rear axle still apply.

The 917 will have a cone clutch PTO instead of the one that hangs beneath the tractor. For this reason you will need to rotate the right side of the gearbox instead of the left as seen in his video.

Thanks ACmowerguy, I have always had 300 & 400 series and was unsure about the 17 twin. Would the older KT not have an. Oil filter and the newer one would ?

They didn't have oil filters on either one in the Allis. Here is another thing you can check to tell the difference:
