Looking to purchase a conical air filter for my puller tractor to cut out the extra weight.  Looking at running it right off the carb but my choices are prettly limited with the inlet size.   I see some tractors run a tube and then adapt to a larger filter, does this help or is it still limited by the inlet size of the carb.  currently theoritical figured about 100 cfm at max rpm but may got up to 140 + later with engine build.
Looking at universal filters but nothing shows cfm ratings.  Looking on a 6 X 4.25 cone with 2 inch inlet.  is this big enough?

dry, oiled?  suggestions?

I would not run a filter right on the carb. I would run a piece of pvc pipe back towards the transmission then a filter.

not really practical on a UC as the steering shaft is in the way.  Ideally a nice looking piece of pipe would run up through the hood but i dont have access to a mandrel bender.  just really need something setup to get going,  i  have a stock motor right now anyway.

I didn't look at the picture sorry. I see that wouldn't work for your application but With a filter straight on the carb it pulls air in from all directions and tumbles around and doesn't flow well. I was told this along time ago and didn't believe it till I hooked it to my dyno it made four hp more on both my WCs with a 24" piece of pvc.

to get the turbulence to stop in a pipe you need a straight run of pipe you take the ID and make it 12" for every 1" so a 2" pipe needs to be 24"

Thanks guys, I did not know this. I'Ll get something figured out, I will need all the help I can get.
Will a bend in the tube affect the air flow negatively after the straight run? Thinking I need to get a tube up through the hood for a 24 inch run and avoid radiator heat.

I wouldn't worry about that bend to much. It would have to be better then sucking in that engine/radiator heat.

I have a Spectra Cone shape on mine
They are around $30 at local auto shops.

3" hole diameter seems to be standard

 Cal(KS), theres some Minnie Mos in my area that just run the tube forward just in front of the rad. Doesn,t  look the best but it works for them. Wouldn't be hard to do on a UC.

here is what i have concocted.   couple of mandrel bends from summit racing cut and welded together because naturally 1 piece isnt long enough.  just need to weld on a ring so it can bolt on at the manifold.  i have a 24 inch run before it hits the elbow

only about 50 lbs lighter than that cast tank of an air cleaner lol

that is a nice looking tractor.   I wish I had the time or could afford to paint mine but i will be lucky to get this thing legal to pull in time.   but .... paint doesnt make it pull any better :)

How much does a UC weigh?

For a 318 engine, they don't seem to be very powerful. I guess it had a lot of Torque?

charlie, im hoping to get down to 5000 Natpa Div II legal but i i wont know till im done and weigh it.  

I hope it has some torque because no, they arnt rated very high.  I have only had mine running for a few minutes after i bought it before i started to strip it down and work on the finals/leaks/ brakes.  They only have like 4-1 compression but I have some ideas on getting alot more out of this motor, however Im going to hold off until i get some pulls in and see how it goes before I spend my very limited income.

coincidently  MM  U variations start showing up at #5500 in the natpa results 
according to tractor data they spec closesly stock wise to AC U @ 36 hp pto and 27 Dbr 
U is 35 and 30 respectively


to clarify, I dont have the resources or intentions to compete on the NATPA circuit, my local club uses natpa rules

In the early 1970's I had a friend that pulled a turboed UC in the 5500 Super Stock class in SE Kansas....I will see him tomorrow at a pull..

UC AC's are few and far between in my area..In 1976 I bought one in rough shape and sold it to a friend..He restored it and then about 10 years ago sold it to another friend..It now resides 8 miles east of me..

Your UC AC looks pretty nice..You seldom ever see one at a pull because they are scarce..I think one could be made to be a good 3 MPH puller..


Theres a huge cubic inch U MM at Fredonia,KS and I think he pulls either 4th gear or road gear in the 5000-5500 Open classes...At this pull he's coming down the track over 15 MPH...I can run 3rd gear in the 5500 Open but seldom pull that class...I'm 300 cubes less than this one and its going to get bigger..My U MM is a 4-5 MPH puller at 5500-6000-6500...
