I got a B gas tank strap off of ebay a few days ago. I lined it up with my '49 B's tank strapand it is much longer, a guess would be 2 inches longer on each side.

Did the early B's have a different tank support that was smaller requireing a longer tank strap?

Perhaps I have gotten one off of a power unit?

Thanks,
Dave

Or could it have been off a WC,WD or 45 and the seller just listed it wrong?

The parts manual shows two numbers.  One for electric start, one without.  Now that you mention it, I got some parts from a '39 B for my '48 B...The strap was shorter, but I had electric start.

If memory serves, the PU and tractor straps are the same length. The PU stap doesn't have the raised area on both sides to go over the horizontal seam on the gas tank. (the PU tank has no horizontal seam) ...but then I'm old, and I barely remember what I had for breakfast!

The gas tanks for the Early B's and the later B's are different. I am not sure if the strap has anything to do with these changes, however based on this post I would assume so. The early B tanks are held on with screws from the bottom while the older one's have a back bolt and the strap if memory serves me correctly. My '40 and '50 B's are this way respectively.

The Tanks are different but thats not the reason the straps are longer or shorter because the tanks are physically the same size. Its the tank support casting thats different along with the torque tube on early or late Bs
