My friend and I bought another Allis Chalmers Microfiche reader yesterday and as luck would have it they had four towers of microfiche. The problem is both sets of the microfiche that I have bought have been dusty. Does anyone know how to clean these off without damaging them? My friend found an old dealer and we made a pretty good haul yesterday afternoon. Along with the microfiche and reader we got some NOS grease zerks in the A/C package. Some operators manuals, 185,7580,4w-305, 220, 7045,7060,220,8050,8070 all in fair to excellent shape. We also snagged some service manuals. All in all it ended up being a good day.

gee there's one of them readrs for sale locally here...no fishes though...
maybe google 'cleaning microfiches' ?? I'd think warm soapy water,rinse,hang up with clothes pins and air dry ??

Look up photographic film cleaning. I'd avoid water and soap because the film printing involved water solutions of chemicals. I'd try dry cleaning with a soft brush to knock the dust of without scratching, like an artist's paint brush with fine natural hair instead of stiff plastic fibers. Maybe some air from a clean air compressor with oil and water trap, or a can of compressed gas for cleaning cameras.

Allis used two types of cards. One type can be cleaned with water, the other cannot as all of the print will wipe right off. The thinner, more glossy cards can usually be cleaned (often for tractors). The thicker more dull looking ones (usually they are for implements or combines) cannot be cleaned. I have stacks of them too dirty or damaged to read. Could spend weeks cleaning the good ones.
