How difficult is it to convert a d17 to 12 volt, how much am I looking to spend? Never done this before, what can I expect? Have a 12 v starter, need an alternator.

A D17 is already 12 volt.

your probably looking at converting the old 12 volt positive ground generator to a new negative ground alternator. THE voltage is the same. THe battery cables are just switched to get the negative ground. You need to change the coil wires around so the path thru the distributor point does not change. You also reverse the wires on the amp meter so it reads the right direction. Last is to remove the generator and regulator and install a newer alternator. GEt one with an internal voltage regulator. many people use the Delco 10SI that was used by GM from 1966 to about 1990. I prefer the newer smaller models like the CS 130 that was built in the 1990- 2000 era on GM. Any alternator with built in regulator is fine, Some use the Nippon, etc..

you can get any of the alternators rebuilt at Aut Zone, but most people just buy one from the local junk yard or thru e=bay

I just had a 12v generator repaired, bearings and brushes and the cost was less than buying an alternator.

-already wired for a gen, has worked with a gen for yyyeeeaaarrrsss and no need to fabricate alternator mounts and rewiring;

-just remove generator and replace.

If someone has reversed the battery connections then you may have a stuck regulator contact which will drain the battery voltage with ignition off. Look for sparking when battery cable is connected or disconnected with everything turned off, ignition and lights, radio etc.
