They can't be only 63 horsepower; the alternator broke on our 190XT so we're using are high geared 185 to plow with out Oliver four bottom plow, and it works but it pulls it okay. We go in low 2nd usually and always in sod, and high second in easier ground. Given the plow only has 16 inch bottoms, it still digs pretty good, and a D17 rated at 60 horsepower certainly wouldn't pull it. Now I know all diesels for the most part are turned up. Kind of like how the motor used in the 190XT tested at 80 horsepower was later used in a model rated for over 120 horse. I plowed up old alfalfa with my 170D and a McCormick 4-16 trailer plow this spring and was surprised how the 62 horses handled it. My D19TD pulls it faster and deeper....
I've pulled my Oliver 3-18 rollover with my 175D and it pulls it well, just hard to keep the front end on the ground when turning!

| I have plowed many a furrow with our 185 and 4/16 model 2000 AC plow. I never found ground it would not pull it in,always plowed in high second or low third,but in sod low second so that the plow would not roll the sod back up from going too fast.The tractor was never turned up but always had 80 hp. on the dyno. |

| 185's were rated at 74 hp and very doubtful that they can even make it to 80 hp (regardless of what some dyno said...M&W dyno's usually read high) without a turbocharger.....all they will do is smoke heavily when over the rated setting. If you ever saw a straight 190 diesel (not an XT) they were 77 hp and smoked a lot compared to a 185 model. D-17's were only 53 HP. A 190XT diesel was rated at 94 hp and is essentially a 185 engine with a little bit more fuel and a turbo added to get enough air to burn the extra fuel and an eng oil cooler to handle the extra heat from the turbo. You KNOW all diesels are turned up??? I think not. The 301 engine used in a 7020 tractor isn't the same engine as a 190XT...different turbo, added intercooler, lower compression ratio, piston cooling, stronger crankshaft, different cylinder head, stronger block, higher gpm oil pump, etc, etc. Engineers think long and hard when adding HP to try and keep the longevity of the engine. Most all 185's were used on a four bottom plow if plowing was it's designated chore....nothing new about that. |
