I noticed when we rehabbed the carb (TSX 464) on the WD45 that there was no clip connecting the float valve to the float. Also that the float could drop down far more than I am used to seeing on other MS carbs. Is it possible that the wrong float is in this carb? I'm asking because the carb starting leaking gas today after I ran the tank dry - am wondering if the float dropped down low enough that the float valve may have fallen out of its seat...... haven't pulled the carb off to check this out yet - but this seems possible to me. If not that, then perhaps rust or dirt got past the sed bowl. Thanks!

I don't think the float could drop far enough to let the needle slip out, most likely a piece of rust or other foreign material is stuck at the needle/seat area.
 The clip is there to keep the needle from sticking in the seat,  weight of float pulls the needle down.

May not have the float adjusted right so that when the bowl fills up that it puts enough pressure on the needle valve to shut the fuel off. As far as the little clip, most of the old carbs that haven't been touched in a long time don't have that clip.

The carb worked fine Wednesday and Thursday until I added gas late in the day. I did notice when we rebuilt the carb that the float is able to drop down quite low - about a 70* angle with the top half of the carb - seemed a lot compared to others.
 
I'll be checking into this today or tomorrow - will let you know what I find.

If you ran the tank dry and the carb bowl went empty, it might have let the float drop down far enough to hang up. I have seen it happen if the float drop is excessive.

CTucker, that might have happened as float drop is a LOT in this carb. Floats I've seen before are designed so that they will only drop to about parallel with the carb top half - this one drops a lot further.

I would normally set the float to be close the inlet when it is parallel with the top half. There should be a way to set the drop too.

Should be a tab that catches close to the pin to stop the float from going way down. Running the tank out of gas can cause some fine particals to wash out of the tank when filling which can lodge in the seat to hold the needle off the seat. It does not take much to let it leak by the needle. If the needle fell out it would empty the tank in a short time.
