I just got a jd 265 with Kowalski 17 hp engine on it I hot it turning over it has compression but popes and blows flames out intake. I set the valves and still no good. I put my hand over carb it sucks in not out. Put my hand over exhaust and it blows out.
It has spark. I checked the key on fly wheel it looks ok.
Any one no any thing about these engines.
Please help.

Either the intake valve is hanging up (at least sometimes) or the timing is off blowing fire out before the valve gets shut.

I have a 17hp Kow on my zturn lawnmower had something like that with a bad coil got a new coil from NAPA and it would run on only one cyl had to get a new coil from Kow to fix it.

as c tucker says those kawis have probley got a stuck valve or bent push rod or only fireing one cyl. did you pull the flywheel off to check the key? most small engines you cant see both keyways with the wheel on also alot of kawaskis have a ignition modual that goes bad and coil is still good if the modual is bad go to your local mower shop and get the uniersal modual

Ok I pulled the flywheel off the key is not shred, I put a new plug in and flushed carb and put fresh gas in. Fuel pump is workingand pumping gas to carb. I checked for bent push tubs, tubs are good. It seamed to have good compression. It is blowing flame out both intake and exast. It does have spark it just seams to be at the rong time. The guy I got the tractor from said he replaced the ignition modual. I was wondering if it was possible that the modual is for the rong engine. Like maby for a two cylinder instead of a single cylinder.
