I got a call from my Dad this PM and he called to tell me that the A/C in my 7000 black belly was not very cold when he used it for the first time this summer.  I went though the entire system 2 years ago and replaced all the o rings, hoses, and the expansion valve.  I had a bad hose in the system.  It holds a charge through the summer pretty well as far as I can tell (I never added any last summer), but every winter it loses the charge.  It has the original A6 compressor on it.  I have run both 134a and the hydrocarbon refrigerants in the system, and both leak out about the same.  Is this just normal for an older A6 compressor, or should I be looking for a leak in the 134 adaptor fittings on the compressor?  I have had these in mind as being the culprits for a while, but I haven't changed them.  I have done soap and water over the connections and found no bubbling.  Maybe someone on here has had a similar experience?

we've just came to the conclusion that they're almost always going to leak out during the winter.

Did you install barrier hoses or standard R12 hoses? The standard hoses will leak with R-134a.

The A6 compressor isn't inherently leak prone.  Some systems just have a weak spot or two that is hard to find, even with a halogen leak detector.  On a hard to find leak, I think using UV dye in the system and then checking for leaks is the only way to find it.

My brother had a slow leak in his Caravan and the mechanic said it would cost $700 to fix because there was a leak up under the dash and in the back. He went to Wallyworld and bought some refrigerant with a sealer included and puts one can in every year about this time. Much cheaper and easier than gutting the inside of the vehicle and paying out the nose for the repair.

The A-6 is one of the easiest compressors to replace a shaft seal in if thats where it's leaking. Tracer dye is what you need. Dye will find the leaks too small for a halogen detector to find. Just need a black light and amber colored glasses. Ford and GM both started putting dye in the systems from the factory about 2002. That's a God send for warranty or otherwise A/C work.

There is some oil residue I remember last time I was home right above the compressor pulley, but it seemed to be pretty well crusted over with dead bug guts.  I read that A6's were pretty bad about having a little oil leak out of the shaft seal with the noninterface ceramic seals they used.  I guess I need to try the UV dye first before throwing parts at the compressor/AC system.  The replacement hoses were barrier hoses rated for 134.
