not sure if anyone has done this wth their
hd5 , I pulled the 1/4" plug out of the air intake
and put in a 1/4" pipe thread to 3/8" air line fitting.
I then put on a 3/8" fuel line about 3' long and
ran i it up through a hole in the dash .I then made a
wood plug to put in the end of the fuel line. My hd5
starts with very little ether now in the cold weather

I agree what you have done works very good. I have done the same to some of my equipment. Like you say it does not take much ether when none is wasted. I was tempted once and did the wrong thing when running out of fuel in my truck with a Detroit 6-71. I was painfully close to the fuel station and used a bit of ether to restart the truck without bleeding the lines...the long and the short of it - the blower gasket failed Cry. Thankfully nothing worse happened but I confirmed the advice that you never use ether to a hot engine Ouch
