Ive got a HD6 that has been sitting, and we are trying to get it started. it has fuel at the injection pump, and will bypass fuel back to the tank. however when you loosen the injector lines no fuel is coming out. It will run as long as we put either to it. any ideas on what may be going on? when we rescued this from a barn a few years ago it fired up just like it had been started the day before. but after sitting a while it is having problems. Ours did the same thing last spring. I removed the fuel shutoff access cover, did a little wiggling and put it back together. Started immediately.HD3 did the same thing a few years ago. Played with the shutoff and it started with the fuel bowl cover off. | what exactly was moving under the fuel shut off access cover? we took it off, part of it would move, but there was a silver flat piece in there that was connected to the plate down inside. and it wouldnt move. wasnt sure if it was supposed to or not. hope that made a little bit of sense. |

| Check the bleed nut on the side of the pump, there is a little spring in there, make sure its free and not broken |

Got a case 500 diesel and that rod goes back to the govenor ... and it would run great when I first got it started and running, but then I dumped in new fuel and that meter control lever gets stuck in the OFF position and once in a wide open position and pulling the shutoff stopped her, but then it wouldn't start... soaked it in solvent and now it leaks into the body of the pump... Blamed it on the new fuel not having enough lubericity in it.

| It has the four stroke four cylinder engine? Check with a local fuel injection shop as to what is supposed to move in the old American Bosch style pumps. |

If it is a Bosch PSB pump this might help. http://www.oldengine.org/members/diesel/Ambac/AmbacMenu1.htm We've got one on an AC 45 grader. In behind what they call the "timing window" (which has the shut-off rod connected to it) is the rod which goes through to the base of the hydraulic head and controls the spill valve in there. It is connected to a rod which goes back to the govener assembly and should move IIRC. Ours had a problem of not responding from idle. Took diesel tech son most of a day to find a tiny burr on that rod which was enough to make it bind up when it got primary pump pressure on it from inside the base of the head. |

The one you take out of the hydraulic head with two screws... that is what happens to my case tractors pump, binds up when pressure is bult up in pump, Didn't find any burr on it. ------------- He who says there is no evil has already deceived himself The truth is the truth, sugar coated or not. | When you say 'it has been sitting' for a while, that gives me a suspicion that it could be the plunger twisted off. A very common problem on the PSB pumps. I hope that is not the problem but wouldn't be surprised if it was. |

| The Stanadyne(or RoosaMaster) style pumps have the housing over-pressure relief valve in the shutoff housing cover. Typical failure all the way into GM and Ford diesels that used the same style pump, all farm tractors with that style did the same. Debris gets in the check ball, lodges it in the closed condition, the pump builds static pressure and shuts down the pump, this is usually followed over time by failure of the advance mechanism coupling and all out shut down of the engine. The PSB pump is a whole other breed of single plunger injection system. |

Ok, I'm in TramwayGuys court, although I'm not sure what kind of pump it is yet. (a picture would be helpful). But the PSB pump was very common to early HD6s and shearing that drive was very common to PSB pumps sitting. If so I suspect it would look like this when it taken apart. (and that's not good)  |

I know back in the day my dad would always set the throttle to kill the machine he didn't like using the kill rod .I don't know why he never said he just made it a point he didn't want it used. |
