I'm going to be pulling the pump on my 185D for rebuild and I know that you have to make sure the marks are lined up. When I take off the inspection cover will it be clear as to what the marks look like and when they are lined up? Do you just turn it a bit at a time with the starter to get them lined up? Just trying to be prepared when I start this project. Thanks

Do it the easy way. Scribe a line on the pump mounting flange and the engine plate, so you know exactly where the pump is mounted (like a distributor on a gas engine) and after draining the fuel from the pump by removing the window, remove the pump. The driveshaft for the pump is a flat tang drive and has a "dot" on one end of it. The inside drive socket of the pump also has a "dot". When you re-install, line up the "dots" and your scribe mark and it is exactly where it was before. Easiest way to remove the pump is to remove all six exhaust manifold bolts and raise up and set the manifold and muffler on the top of the valve cover. Disconnect all the lines at the injectors. Remove the inj pump with all the injector lines on it and strip the injector lines from the pump after removal.
