Hello guys I am new to the Forum and I have read previous post about the PTO problems. In fact the tractor in question is one from a post on here. So here goes.  the PTO shaft can be spun by hand even when engaged and I have checked the shifting lever behind the battery box. Here's the tricky part. With the power driector lever in neutral position when you engage the PTO it will kick it out automatically. with it in HIGH or LOW it stays engaged but does not work. It looks like the tractor has been split apart and my best guess is that the coupler has fallen or was not installed. Would this cause it to kick the PTO lever out when power director is in neutral?
thanks Sam

Sounds like there is two problems. Behind battery box there should be a lever with no linkage to it. Move that lever should engauge the couppler, it will move hard.
Next the pressure may have been set up too heigh that it kicks the lever out. MACK

Thanks for the reply Mack  I have rotated the lever in both directions without success. even while turning the PTO shaft while moving lever. As for the pressure I will check that when I get home in about 3 weeks. I am new to owning an allis but have used them a lot. Like I said before this is a tractor I bought from a member of this forum only a couple days before I had to head to work.  thanks for the advice.  Sam

Rotate that lever counter-clockwise while someone else is turning the PTO shaft at the rear of the tractor. If nothing happens, the coupler must not be inside the torque housing. If someone removed the PTO clutch box from the tractor without having this lever engaged, the coupler would have fallen out of place and is laying inside the housing doing nothing.

Ok guys I got home the other day and today I got the 180 out and double checked the lever behind the box. No matter which direction i put it in it can free spin by hand with the tractor running and PTO engaged.
Should that be easy to turn when engaged? I would think not. so I am guessing the coupler is not installed or has fallen into the PD compartment.

Still have the slipping problem In low range though. I will tear into it as soon as I build the Shop this week.

ok guys doing some more checking on the 180 I have a couple questions.
1) Why does the PTO lever Engage when you put the PD in neutral?
2) Why would low range on PD slip?
3) If the PTO coupler has fallen into the PD compartment. Is there a way to reinstall it without splitting the tractor?

Have you tried contacting the last owner? Most of the guys in here would tell you what they did if they split the tractor.   I know if I sold something I would try to help the next guy figure out what was wrong.   You could always private message the guy in here so he isn't put on the spot just thinking out loud. Best of luck sorting it out I don't the tractor in question so I can offer any advice.

When I bought it we talked and he is the one that pointed it out that the tractor might have been split. I don't think he owned it very long as he was asking on here how to repair it. Its fine. I am really curious about the PTO engaging when I put the PD in neutral. That puzzles me.  if anyone could enlighten me on that it would be appreciated. As soon as I get the shop built I will pull it in and see what can be done even if I have to split it. Thanks Sam

You need to get a 600 psi pressure gauge (or two gauges) connected to the manifold down where the brake latch pawl is located. If your pressure is too high, from a stuck regulator spool (common problem) the excess pressure can force the PTO lever out of detent because the detent spring/ball/roller isn't strong enough to overcome the excess hydraulic pressure. Just get a gauge and verify pressures less than 300 psi at full throttle LOW-NEUTRAL-HIGH on the Power Director lever.

thank you DrAllis  I will grab some gauges and hoses in the morning and test the pressures. I still have to figure out how to reinstall the Coupling for the PTO shaft. Is it possible to do it without splitting the tractor?

Yes, with small hands and a helper. Requires PTO box removal.
