What is the consensus here....
Tractor, WD45, has not run in 10-12 years. Think she would run again without rebuilding the carb? It looks OK, no critters inside. Just put it back on, clean the tank, new fuel line and go. What are the chances?

Jeff - my Gleaner EIII sat in a shed longer than that and I didn't touch the carb other than remove the drain plug and run some fuel out of it and it runs great. Mike

If it wasn't run dry, there's a good chance there's varnish in the jets and the seat for the float needle valve. You can test the float needle valve to see if it opens and closes without taking anything off or apart, just take out the float bowl drain plug and turn on the fuel valve at the tank with gas in the tank and see if you get a flow the size of a pencil for 5 minutes (catch that gas and recycle it back to the tank). Then put the plug in and see that the carburetor doesn't overflow. Another place for varnish to have gathered (even if run daily for the last 30 or 40 years) is the inlet adapter screen. Gerald J. |

you may need to clean the points to get spark. file with an emery board or points file, wipe clean and see what happens. sitting so long can make them not have a good contact and no spark. good luck! ------------- HD5B, HD5G, (2) FARMALL A's, CUB. I got this old WD-45 at a farm sale just for the power steering, Got it home before I removed the steering unit decided to start it up and see how good it was, I didn't put the radiator on it because the tractor was just parts or so I thought, put some gas in her and a old Batt, she fired right up I ran it for maybe a min or two and then realized just how good the old tractor was running! I now use this tractor around here the most. lol

If you looked in the carb and there wasn't much debris or rust especially, a quick roto rooter with a can of Gumout or you favorite carb cleaner should clean it up pretty quickly to at least get the engine fired and see how it runs. Ya never know, you might be okay. Me personally, I would go through it top to bottom, install it, and that's one thing less I'd have to pull back off later. But, that's just me...... Steve@B&B |
