I JUST BOUGHT AN I400 FRONT LOADER TRACTOR, AND THE REVERSE JUST STOPPED WORKING.I DONT HAVE A MANUAL FOR IT YET. ANY SUGGESTIONS?

I don't know the industrial line very well but I think that is basically the same tractor as the d15. If so I would say you have a bad shuttle clutch. On the d15 there is a side access panel on the torque tube on the right side. From there you can get to the clutch pack and adjust the shims to tighten it up. If that doesn't work you might have to split the tractor. I would say you will need the service manual for sure.

it could have worn through the u channel on the shifter collar = pull the plate and see..

a 400 is the same as a d10-12 does your 400 have a reverser or is it a straight 4 speed with reverse or does it have 8 speeds forward and 2 reverse,

Before you open the side cover make sure you drain the oil for that compartment.   Does the gear shifter in the transmission closest to the seat have 4 speeds plus reverse or just 4 speeds with a separate lever for reverse?

From the comment above about it being like a d10 d12 they are saying there are three transmission options for your tractor. One is just a 4 speed transmission with reverse.   The second is the same transmission with a high low clutch pack in the torque tube in front of the transmission the third option is the shuttle clutch in the torque tube with a 4 speed transmission without reverse in the transmission.   If you have the third option you problem is in the torque tube shuttle clutch if you have the first two options it is in the transmission.   Be sure which setup you have before you take the effort to open up anything looking for the problem.

I have a I400 and its the same as late D10 or D12. The reverser on them is manual unlike the D14 and D15 that have shuttle clutch. As Dustin said they came 3 ways. Mine is a 4 speed with reverser. Although I have never tried it in 4th I think there is a reverse in every gear.

i have only had it 2 weeks, but i was told it is a shuttle clutch.It has the lever for forward and reverse on the torque tube. does that mean its not a shuttle clutch?, what is your reccomendation

the fwd and rev lever is the shuttle clutch.

Will the lever go back but the tractor just won't go backwards or is something stopping you from physically moving the lever?

The first thing to check is that the key locking the lever onto the shaft didn't fall out. And that you can see a the shaft moving when you move the lever. After that I would get the manual and read the section on the shuttle clutch you can probably adjust the shims in the shuttle clutch pack but you will need to read the service manual first to know what the correct procedure is. If that doesn't work you would have to split the tractor and replace the clutches. I am just confused by your discretion that you can't get it into reverse normally it will go into reverse but it won't back up well. The typical problem of weak clutches shows up as you can back up on flat ground but as soon as you come to a hill it will stop because the clutches slip.

    the lever wont go into reverse anymore, just neutral and forward. the lever stops solid in neutral, like its hitting something solid and the lever cannot be moved into the reverse position at all. before the other day, the lever moved into forward and reverse just fine, and the tractor ran good in reverse or forward.

That lever has a button on the top that moves a pin down near the bottom of the lever look to see if something is blocking the pin. My d17 has a tendency for the lower pin to hit one of the bolts on the cover plate. That lever on the inside of the transmission moves a fork to switch the clutch pack I can't think of anything in there it could be binding on I would quicker think your problem is the little lock pin on the bottom attached to that button on top normally on mine when I have trouble the button is stuck down and I take a screw driver and just force the little pin on the bottom back into the handle.

That is totally different then the d15 like others have said so agsin I think my advice is not very helpful. Sorry didn't really just how different that setup was.

You might try looking it up on agcoparts.com and you can find the expanded parts drawing there which would give you some idea what is on the inside. I am wondering if you dropped a wood drift key or something like that but not having worked on one of them I can't say how they are made.

The I-400, I-40, D10 and D12 shuttle or hi/lo setup is NOT a clutch, but some kind of linkage and collar/sleeve/gear arrangement. They cannot (or should not) be shifted when the tractor is moving. I think that is why a lot of the shuttle systems failed...forward to reverse will give a lot of gear clash and probably formed a burr on something so it doesn't slide together anymore. I'm not sure exactly how they are set up since the I-40 I had someone had already taken the guts out of. Just my educated guess....but it is totally different than a D14, D15, I-60 or I-600.
