The D17 that I am working on, about half of the bolt holes on each side are stripped and the previous owner put longer wheel bolts through with nuts on the backside to fix the problem, but made it a real pain last night when I changed out and put new tires/wheels on with different wheel centers. Would like to fix them up right, so wondering what the best method is to fixing them. I have seen helicoils used but I don't know if they make them in that fine thread and if they would even hold up to the stress of the rear wheels. Or am I just better to try and partially weld the holes shut and redrill and retap them and then put nuts on the back for good measure? This is the first time I have dealt with this and want to make sure that it is also the last time I do this job on this tractor.

I think they are nine sixteenth thread now I believe maybe I would try and go a size bigger and tap them out to a five eighths diameter the rim hole is close to that already or maybe that is open for debate? Fred

Chuck, we used inserts like this one where I used to work. If there is enough room to open the hole up and tap it. These work much better than a helicoil. http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/items/5WY99?Pid=search - http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/items/5WY99?Pid=search

The longer bolts with the nuts is how Allis Chalmers made the 180 better and stronger. I would convert them all to bolts and nuts.
