Just bought a D17 up in Mo. Was told no leaks. Went in shop and a puddle under it. Leaking from rear main seal. I assume not a drop pan and fix, right? Tractor will need to be broke apart?. Thanks

Right out of the manual.
85. REAR SEAL. Lower half of oil seal is located in the rear main bearing
cap and upper half is located in seal retainer that is attached to rear
face of cylinder block. Renewal of rear seal requires removal of engine
from tractor. Then, remove clutch, flywheel, engine rear adapter plate
and oil pan. Unbolt and remove rear main bearing cap and seal retainer.
Do not trim ends of seal as the seal will compress when bearing cap is
tightened. Be sure that oil seal contact surface on crankshaft is smooth
and true. Apply gasket sealer to back of seal and seal groove; be careful to
avoid getting gasket sealer on face of seal. Lubricate seal and reassemble
by reversing removal procedure.

Thanks I guess I already knew it would have to be broken down just hoping. It was suppose to have a complete rebuild on engine new clutch pressure plate a couple of years ago, now I am not sure. Thanks again for your info I guess in need to pickup  a manual

It could be whoever worked on it thought the rear seal was too long and cut it off.

It was suppose to have been done by a dealer.
