I put a overhaul kit in my D-17 about 3.5 years ago and unfortunatly the only thing I have used it for is snow removal and Grandkid rides. Not that those are bad but it has rarely gotton up to operating temp.  This week I drove it to my sons and got it up to about 175  degrees on the temp gauge and it stayed there  for the drive and while I was mowing with a pull type woods mower which is only a 5 footer but it kept the temperature at 175 for the 5 or so hours I ran it.
The problem is that even though it had never used any oil for the few hours I ran it doing very light work it used a little over a quart  on Saturday.  Is this the rings seating since it finally was run at a operating temp or do I have another problem  It ran and sounded great the whole time and appears to have NO leaks. I know Dad always put his 45's and 17's on the first heavy job that came up after an overhaul.   Please advise.  Thx, Jim

I forgot to add that it did not smoke at all.  Jim

At this point, I wouldn't be overly concerned about it. It takes time for the rings to seat, etc.

Probably the best thing for you to do is run it some more and observe the oil consumption. If it continues or gets worse, then I would start to be concerned. But I'm betting the amount of oil it uses will go down as the engine gets broke in.

It probably needs more work. I put rings and bearings in a 66 Chevy pickup once and it took about 14,00 miles of running before the rings seated in. I know why now(Sears Best Chrome Rings). If you've only had it up to temp once, I'd say you need to put it to work and don't worry about some oil consumption right now.

be sure that you are using the proper oil.straight 30w for summer work is best. for winter you can get by with a 10w-30. any good name brand automotive oil should be fine.

I tried to follow the science, but it was not there. I then followed the money, and that’s where I found the science.

I hope you are right Goose . Dad (89 years young) said that was probably it.  He said I needed to do some plowing with it!! LOL, I do have the 30 wt oil in it and I'll fill it up and try it again the next time I'm off work.   3 week stretch the last time and of course it rained me out from mowing Sat.
P.S.  Dad ran an 8070 and 25 ft disc over 300 acres last week for my brother.  Walks wp to the tractor with a walker and pulls himself in and pulls the walker in with a rope.  Really gets PO-ed when it catches on something. I wish I had his determination.  Jim

Jay,  I'll try but I'm rarely there when he's working.  I work at a Fert plant and when he's busy i'm busy. I wish I had video tapes of him telling some of his stories.  May try that yet if I get a camera and he will talk in front of it.  Farmed with horses in the 30's then a flatback WC through the 8070. Thrashing rings  to a 60 combine through the M3 gleaner.  What a life experience.. A dealer told him  he needed a guidance system to help drive  with.  His comment was, If I can get in the SOB  I can drive it.  How true that is. His judgement with that size equipment is still better than a lot of younger people.  Lost mom 3 years ago. I dread the day he leaves us too.  Jim
