| When I was visiting my son who lives near Shreve Ohio we saw an allis tractor that appeared to be modified for oil well work. Just wondering what it was used for. Also saw a nice allis combine with a two row head that apeared to have been used recently along hwy 42 east of Ashland. My compliments to both owners. |

They are Cooper pulling units. They are used when they pull a well to clean it out or make repairs. The idea is that the unit lifts the sucker rods and polishing rods out of the well. Get the rods high enough and you can unscrew that section of rod and lay it to the side, then pull the next section and do the same thing until they are all out. Make the repairs and then reinstall the rods. Those rigs are all over the place down here. Would be really neat to see one restored. The rigs here have nearly the same size treaded tires on the front as the back has. Most of them around here are WC conversions.

The ones down here are not quite like that. They have a spool that is similar, but they have a large pole beam that goes over the operator and runs the length of the tractor. The pole is probably 18-20ft long. When in place it extends to maybe 30-40 feet long and is set vertical. There is a large pulley at the top of the pole as well. All of the ones areound here have wide fronts on them. Similar to a factory WC arched wide front. But they have 26" (I think) treaded tires on the front.

That looks like the ones down here. Glad someone has one though in a collection. The oilfield guys down here abuse the heck out of them. Most are cobbled together time and time again.
