I have a sherman step up. It does not do me much good with a 30 percent increase. I was wondering if I could swap the gears and change the ratio to a step down. I makes sence from a manufacturing standpoint to have changeability, but I dont want to go through all thew work if someone on here can tell me, OR more importantly, tell me what is inside one, and what to expect. Thanks..

I have had the rear of my step up apart, but no further.  All I really know is there are 2 different gear WIDTHS, but as far as making a drop, I am not sure.  If it can be done, I would consider it.  I need the rear gear that gets lost when they come apart.  I have the wide gear which if I remember is 1 1/2" wide

finish that picture of  the big motor and you probably like the stepup.  I finished machining the new large cap distributor to fit today. need to put the magnetic pick up and reluctor back in it make up the wires  time it .Then I  should be putting ole timebomb in the tractor next weekend and routing the oil cooler lines .   Smelling smoke is getting close for me.

If it is like what the N series Fords used, no you cant turn the gears around. Housing won't allow it.

Head over to John Smith's Old Ford Trasctors.  He has a great pictorial on the Sherman trannies.  I used it entensively to get the problem fixed in my step up/down sherman.

I talked to my dad last night.  He has both Sherman step up and step down transmissions for  WC's (two different transmissions).  The gears inside are different, but the cases are the same.  So if I understand your question correctly: no you cannot swap the gears around inside a step up to make it a step down.  But if you found the gears from a step down, you could put them in your step-up case.

He has a parts manual that he has temporarily misplaced.   Once he finds it, he said that he will tell me exactly which gears are different.  He said he knew for sure the "two gears  in the back" were different.  He said they did have the same tooth count, just reversed.
