Anybody know of a good solution to cut through 20 years of carb gunk? It's on the outside of the carb. I could clean it off by hand but it would take forever. It's a mixture of gunky fuel residue and field dust and man is it tough to remove.

Really the only way to get that kinda gunk off Carburetors is with a putty knife and some time. Some of our customer's Carbs that come in here to get rebuilt are amazing how much crud is on them from blow-by and field dust n' dirt. Its like concrete! After I get the heavy stuff off, I then use a wire brush and hot soapy water to get the rest off before they go in the tank for a soak. Distributors and drives get like that to after years of layers of blow-by n' dust n' dirt...

I drill a lot of 1/16" holes in a length of 1/4" copper tubing, coiled it up like a snake then attached tubing between it an an aquarium air pump.Suspend the carb in a big coffee can or similar and fill with a liquid 'orange' cleaning solution, full strength. The more agitation the better at removing the crud. Only takes a few hours though I usually forget it's working, leave it overnight.....hen it's even cleaner ! Just be sure to rinse it off real well, get all the water out of the carb !!
