Hello all,
I'm currently on the hunt for any pictures, or information, about the locomotive(s) at the Allis Chalmers plant in Milwaukee.
I'm a member of quite a few museums, and was doing some research on a particular unit we have and it just so happens that AC purchased new from EMD (Electro Motive Diesel, a branch of GM at the time) a SW1 switcher. I can't seem to find any pictures or much info at all, so I figure this would be the place to come.

I went to the EMD site, Allis bought a early SW1 V6 600hp, road number 8, no pictures I can find.

There were slides of that #8 engine on ebay, page is gone, here's a couple icons
This page lists the unit: http://www.american-rails.com/emd-sw1.html" rel="nofollow - http://www.american-rails.com/emd-sw1.html
Some of the SW1 cab electrical equipment, contactors and such on early units at least, have name plates indicating AC made the gear for EMD.

There another topic in this forum that has good pics, including this nice one from SkyHighBalloon: http://www.allischalmers.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=114304&title=allis-chalmers-locomotive" rel="nofollow - http://www.allischalmers.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=114304&title=allis-chalmers-locomotive http://https://www.flickr.com/photos/22244341@N06/3029802397/in/photostream/" rel="nofollow - http://https://www.flickr.com/photos/22244341@N06/3029802397/in/photostream/
There's some links, and discussion above about engine 904 being AC, may be, but I'm not reading that as 904 is a renumber of engine #8, given the trucks/brakes particularly are different config, different stack, cab door windows, lights, as compared below.

I believe they also used a "Plymouth" brand locomotive for smaller pulls

Could be same engine just updated, hard to tell but the old arch bar trucks were discarded long ago and the exhaust is a change to control noise/sparks, would have to examine s/n to know.

I am thinking underwent a rebuild to bring up to newer specs. Ditch Lights, still has same horn, same bell configuration and same louvers on hood sides, same head lamp. The stack could be for a grain operation, the cab rebuilt to eliminate the shade eye brows they did no longer need.

I think your right about the stack dave . I know when I hauled rice and soybeans out of the field to the driers they had a couple switch engines running around with that spark arrestor stack . I think its a safety thing when the locomotive has to go into a building with all the grain dust so it wont cause a flash fire.

You know, I toured that plant with my father when it was in operation. I can remember seeing that locomotive moving flat cars of tractors around. Good Luck! Bill Long
