| I just bought a 37 wc that has been sitting in a barn for 45 years without being ran it is in great shape except for the tires are shot. The engine is NOT stuck and turns freely. there was a cap over the exhaust sealing it closed.The gas tank is not rusted at all but is bone dry.The drain in the block and lower hose are out so it hasent had water in it since parked.Should i have the carb and mag gone over and try to get it going or just rebuild it? people that i have talked to have said change the oil and filter and to try to get it running. What do you folks think? Any help or tips would be great! Thanks in advance .......Jb |

jb, first, congratulations on your find! I would add coolant, change the oil and filter - yes. But I would also run gas through the tank and sed bowl, check the float and valve in the carb, check to make sure that oil is getting to the head....check the oil level in the tranny and finals - the sort of things you'd do when taking a machine out of storage. Maybe I'm a little cautious, but 45 years is a LONG time for a machine to sit without running. ------------- WC, CA, D14, WD45 |

Well, you have two plus' going for you already. The bone dry fuel tank and a free engine. I would give it a fresh oil change, give the points a little spritz of tuner cleaner or Brakekleen to remove the 45 year oxidation, remove the valve cover and make sure all the rockers are going up n' down (couldn't hurt to give em' a splash of oil either while yer' there) and give it a whirl and see if the ole girl will start. If there isn't anything living in the carburetor, it may just fire right up and run! Just my 2 cents..... Steve@B&B |

I am worried about the valves sticking i guess ill pull the valve cover and lube everything up. I suppose theres no way to prime the engines oiling system is there? man i hope she will run....Jb |

Prime it? Yeah... drain the crankcase, refill it with new oil, pull out the spark plugs, spray a little fogging-oil in each cylinder to give the walls a light coat, then put a crank in it, and hand-turn it two dozen times- it'll prime. You'll be doing that anyway when you check to see that the rockers are rockin', and you'll see oil-flow coming out over the rockers when you turn it... that'll be your cue to fire it up. I wish MY 25-year barn-fresh '37 unstyled WC fared as well as yours, but no chance! |

| i would like to have spoke wheels to match the rears of my wc but my fronts are solid wheels. i guess ill keep them . maybe ill find a set of spokes some day...jb |

| I would do like everyone else says. On my WD that was stuck when I got it, I pulled off the head and made sure I got it free. Then a new headgasket and the head back on, check all the valve clearance, and made sure none were sticking. Then I cranked it over plenty and made sure I got good oil pressure before I put a good mag on and fired it up. In your case, I would pop the valve cover, check all the valves, and take a little oil bottle and lube things up. Do the fogging oil technique, and crank it over until you got good oil pressure, or at least oil coming up to the rocker arms. Then I would try to fire it up. Good luck and keep us posted. |
