My son-in-law has an early D17 and drained the transmission and flushed it with 4 gal of diesel fuel.  Now he is finding it is taking forever to drain out.  Any thoughts?  The dip stick has a hashed area but no full mark.  Does that mean that the top of the hashed area is full?   Whats with the 4 gallon capacity that is listed in the book?  The 4 gallons of diesel fuel measured way over the top of the hash mark.  He has an owners manual for a series IV does that have a different sized tranny? 
 
We are assuming that the transmission lube also lubes the differential.

The differential is part of the trans. I'm not sure right off, but htere may be more than 1 drain plug. My CA has 3. I'm betting there is more than 1 to get all of the trans drained, either that, or there is a huge amount of sludge in there. If it was filled with something like Hy Tran, the additives turn to jelly to remove moisture from circulation.

I may be wrong, but  I think there is more than one location where you need to drain to get all of the transmisssion fluid out.  That is because there is more than one low spot in the housing.

Yes there are three drains I think its been a while. I know there is at least two. The transmission on that tractor uses 80 W 90 gear oil. Many folks run universal hydraulic oil but it will not provide as good of lubrication in the trans as gear oil and wont leak as fast. It also "climbs" up the gears better when the oil is hot.The hydraulic side with the screw type dip stick uses the hydraulic oil. The top of the hash mark is full.

Thanks for the info.  We are draining though a plug low on the driver's left side but there is another plug on the left side of the transmission just aft of the clutch pedal.  We pondered that plug as well but never tried to open it because the lower one intuitively seemed right.  We will give the upper plug a try as well.  We plan on using the 80/90 oil because that is what AC calls for. 
 
The series IV owners manual says we need 4 gallons of oil for the transmisson does that seem right?
 
We are going to top off the final drives as well but they only need a quart.

The drain plug for the transmission is directly under the seat !!!! and above the drawbar and would hold 6 gallons of oil (preferably 80/90 wt) and the filler/dipstick is to the right of the gearshift with the big breather on it.  The HYDRAULIC system has two drain plugs....one under the clutch pedal and the other on the RH side of the sump that the hyd pump draws oil from. Filler/dipstick is the the left of the gearshift and uses universal hydraulic oil/fluid and holds 6 1/2 gallons to the upper mark on the dipstick (do not use the lower mark). All three drain plugs take 1 1/8" wrench.

Thanks for your response.  I just spoke with my son-in-law and he found the under the seat plug and is going to pull it.  He says even though the left side plug only trickled he finally got 6-1/2 gallons of oil and diesel fuel out of it.  It was overfilled because we only got 2 gallons of oil out initially and thought that was it.  The oil barely registered on the dip stick. 
 
My son-in-law just called back to say the under the seat plug was stuck.  I told him to kroil it and tap on it.  We may have to wait until tomorrow to get it unstuck.
 
Earlier he tried to remove a plug from the left side of the transmisson near the clutch pedal but after removing a sheet metal shield to get a better look at it he thought it was some sort of adjustment.  Nothing we have says what it is supposed to do.

I had given directions for a series 4....if this is an older D17, the filler/dipstick to the left of the gearshift is the Power Director clutch and holds 2 to 2 1/2 gallons....the hydraulic  filler/dipstick is along the right side under the gas tank and holds 2 1/2 gallons.......three drain plugs is still correct.

Doc, so there is a separate reservoir for the P.D? I have a series 1 D17. I knew about the hyd fill near the belt pulley opening and the trans filler. I haven't noticed one on the left side on mine. I though the P.D. and hyd were the same.

As I understand it, DrAlils is referring to another plug to the left and forward of the shift lever on the top of the transmission casting.  It is opposite the breather / dipstick.  At least that is where we find one on our Series I.  We haven't looked under that plug yet but plan to this evening.  I'm sure Doc will correct me if I have it wrong.

Leroy - yes, that is correct and you'll find a dipstick under that plug as well for the power director on a Series I.  At Series III the hydraulic and power director compartments were combined and filled thur that gearshift left side plug/dipstick and the fill point on the right side of the torque tube was eliminated. 

Series III holds 6 gallons (24 quarts) in torque tube for the PD & Hydraulics.  Series IV is 26 quarts, my guess is it gained 2 quarts when the old style hydraulic pump was taken out of the torque tube in favor of the belt pulley location mounted pump and that left more space.  Mike
