| Test driving a CA tomorrow. Can someone tell me how to operate and test the hand clutch to see if it's working properly? I know nothing about this hand clutch operation. |

| I imagine it's just like on a WD/WD45. Push or pull to go/stop. Not sure which direction is stop and which is go, but someone will chime in! |

| I DON'T IMAGINE it is like a wd/wd45. ca is altogether different animal. pull lever back and hold back to stop. gently release foreward to go. It is also a small dry clutch on the right axle so don't abuse it. wd hand clutch is a wet clutch between foot clutch and transmission. |

| Thanks. Okay, so I drive the tractor along in gear, then pull the hand clutch (right side over the axle) and it will stop moving but keep the PTO driving--right? HOw can I tell if it's bad or slipping? Is there a way to test that? |

I am certain there are more sophisticated tests out there but we used to engage the clutch after fully stopped with the brakes on. Course you had to have good brakes but we could tell rather quickly if it was not working Also, you could re-engage the clutch under heavy load. That would also tell. Don't forget to go on a steep downhill drive in third and second gear and throttle back quickly to be certain the gear shifters are not damaged and the tractor not jump out of gear. | Another thing some did with these clutches was to bolt them solid rather than fix one that is worn out. I had a friend who used his CA for tractor pulling and he bolted his so there would be no slipping. After he retired from pulling he had me rebuild the clutch so it now works. All this to say it is possible you may find when you pull lever back clutch may not disengage |

had a 1956 ca 12 volt conv. amazing how much it could pull. took it to a tractor pull would have done good but hand clutch slipped towards the end. still always pulled 2 bottom sc plow & ih feild cult. with no problems after that. very sad now that I sold it  hope to replace someday with a d15------------- 716 917 918 1920 d17 6080 |

| Looked at the CA this morning. It runs and drives. Now I know why people love the CA. It really is a nice tractor. The hand clutch was there, but no shifter for it. It idled and drove without smoke, but needs some tuning. I tried to use 4th gear, but it almost stalled before I could get going. Also, the front sheet metal at the nose didn't quite reach the pedestal support. Are the C and CA nose identical. If different, it might have a C nose. Not bad, but he wants $1600. I think it's too high. I was thinking $1200 at most. I need to think about it and then maybe make an offer. |
