The tach get its signal from one of the rectifiers in the alt. Make sure the connection are good at the alt and on the tach and double check how its hooked up. If everything is good and its still erratic you could have a bad signal from the rectifier in the alt. Usually an erratic tach means the alt is weak or dying. Good luck.

The connections are good, the tach worked fine till the old alt. started acting up; put a new alt. on and its charging correct but the tach is still screwing up; tried new wire and no change ;

Check the flat connectors at the alternator. I had to cut the wires and crimp on new connectors because they were rusty and didn't make a good connection and the tachometer would jump all over the place.

Given all the trouble I have had with altenators on 6080's I'd guess that your replacement alternater is not sending the same signal pulse as the original one did to your tach. Trying finding the tachometer specs on line and make sure the alternator specs match. Good luck this drove me crazy. I never did get it resolved to my satisfaction. Earlier tachs had dip switches to change the settings. The late model tachs in 6070/6080 did not have this feature.
