Took my WC pulling for the first time Friday night, and didn't get off the line before I had smoked the clutch. But, discussions with the guys at the tractor show may have given me the answer to my ongoing clutch problems. The pressure plate and clutch disk were new but the plate wasn't putting out enough pressure to hold On the flywheel. Thus the spinning and smoking. The engine has been rebuild and not leaking oil so the only conclusion I can come up with is the flywheel has been faced too many times and is worn out. I'll pull it yet again and see if it is within acceptable tolerance. Which makes me ask, does any one know where I can get a new flywheel for a WC? I know they are making them for some antiques. Also I need to locate the fly wheel specs.

Are you using a 9 spring pressure plate? Is the clutch plate installed backwards?

Unless the flywheel has been ground many times, I doubt that is your problem.

its possible the clutch surface was cut without removing material from the outer edge where the clutch pressure plate bolts.  the outer surface should be taken down to compensate for distance of clutch plate surfacing.  yours may be out of spec or as others have said, not enough spring pressure.  most any place supplying clutches can supply you with the correct specification for step distance

No, I'm using the 6 spring PP. I'm sure the clutch disk is in correctly with the springs out, so the only thing I can guess is the flywheel has been ground too much. If I can find the specks on the flywheel, I'll measure it and know for sure. I had to use a flywheel off a styled WC from a salvage yard and I had it faced so it is possible too much has come off.

I've got a flywheel off of a power unit, and I hope it is in spec and not already cut down. My original problem with the clutch goes back to the flywheel. I could not figure out how I came up with an additional 1/4 inch distance between the throw out bearing and the pressure plate fingers. Now that I know the flywheel is worn out, it makes sense. The last time they faced it they turned the outside edge to get the correct step distance. When I had it faced it without turning the outside, thru it out of spec. I'll pull it this weekend and switch the fly wheels. Dave
