Can a wide front for a WD be made lighter than a narrow front with the heavy pedestal ?

To me, the lightest would be a wide-front axle with the excess steel removed from each axle knee inside the axle tube. Throw away the steering gear and graft a lightweight auto rack & pinion gear on the backside for steering, and then fabricate a hollow box to replace the steering gear to support the axle itself.
