Does anybody know which black paint AC used on the plow bottoms, gloss, semi-gloss, or flat? I am restoring the plow to go behind my D-17.

Flat black. Soft paint should be used if you intend to do any plowing with it. Soft paint is usually that color.

If you are after a proper look then the bottoms should be painted #2 orange not black. The black bottoms came along with the 2000 series and as I remember even the earlier 2000s had orange bottoms.

An Allis 73 I saw yesterday at the Homer Iowa Show. Looks like its never been painted. The plow bottoms are flat black probably the black oxide from heat treatment, not paint. We'd want to paint the wear surfaces (grease if inside except when plowing) to keep them from rusting. A soft paint (cheap spray paint or special plow paint) wears off quickest when actually plowing. Grease even inside won't last much more than a year. On a hot summer day it melts and runs off.

Thanks for the reply's. When cleaning mine up there are some paint runs and lots of rust, but couldn't make out which shade of black it was.

I have a later ser# 73 with black painted bottoms. I don't know the color of black just that AC painted the newer bottoms black. I will guess semi gloss black.
