I have an 1984 8010 that seems to have a problem getting going in road gear. It has the 5 speed manual transmisson, and when starting off in 5th and high range it will chug and die if you do not have the rpm's at least over 1500. This is with just the tractor and nothing hooked to it. Is this normal or is something wrong with the injector pump? It has plenty of power once it is going, and also doing field work in the lower gears.

did this come on all of a sudden? or did you just get this tractor. Droop screw in governor could be in too far cutting low end torque. check boost in the intake manifold also. When it is chugging, is is belching black smoke? HTH.

Sounds like you're not used to running a small (301) turbocharged engine.....turbo isn't spooled up until 1700 rpm.

I did just buy this tractor last fall and haven't used it much, but I do have a 74 200 with the 301 turbo and it starts of in road gear with no problem allthough it is slower than the 8010. I'm just worried about reving the engine so high and slipping the clutch.

Road gear in the 200 is about like 4th in the 8010. It's a "wet" clutch.....set the throttle on 1700 and slip it a little bit and it'll finally go.

Fifth is a high gear to start in. Why not start in third or fourth and shift up on the go?

Unless you're a semi-truck driver and can shift on the roll, forget it......when they removed the foot accelerator, they went backwards on shifting the PD tranny.
