Subject: 8070 FWA lacks power, gets hot.....

I was disking with my 8070 today and it did'nt seem to have the power of a 175 horse tractor.

I am pulling a 20' Kewannee disk with a harrow behind in flat ground

I can only pull in 3rd gear on the low side(power shift).

The tractor gets hot after about an hour of disking.

Tractor seems to smoke alot

I replaced both fuel filters thinking that might have been the problem but did not solve anything.

I checked the air filters and they seemed good.

I have pulled this same disk with my bosses JD 4455(140HP/2wd) with no problem.

Where do I need to look? Pump? Turbo?
Thanks in advance everyone.

Are you using any coolant? Easy enough to check the turbo, just make sure the impellar isn't too tight.

I think you are definitely lacking power.  I got a 220 JD disk (22 ft center fold) behind our 8070 and it is like a toy behind it.  I can bury the disk and run in 5 low with no problems.  I am in hill ground and clay also.  I also pull a 13 shank anhydrous set up in either 1st high or low 4.  Hopefully someone here has got some good advice for you.  I'd think it is hard on the engine if not performing properly.  Greg

Been running 50/50.
I guess my turbo question refered to the amount of boost. How many psi does an 8070 run?
I just think my 8070 should toy with this 20' disk. I can only run about 3mph!
Thanks

I had some come out the overflow today so I will when I start it again.
Air cleaner looked good.

we had a massey 1105 that dad called the salavage yard to sell this tractor because it lacked power and was smoking badly he was going to junk it when all that was wrong was a bird nest in the turbo air cleaner

How long have you owned the tractor?? and when exactly did it start doing this?? Blown intake manifold to cyl head gasket....missing plug in the intake manifold....missing plug on the exhaust manifold....worn out injectors.....injection pump advance has failed retarding pump timing......all of the above will cause the low HP issue.

Check Turbo That It Is Rotating

put a boost gauge in the intake manifold and see how much boost it is making. should be at least 10-15 with the load you have. missing plug in intake manifold on Allis's seem to be common. they will barely get out of their own way, and black smoke like a freight train too!

I got the tractor late last spring, after planting was over. I sidedressed with it and did'nt notice a lack of power but don't use alot sidedressing either. No fall tillage because of the weather. First real work out for it.

These plugs everyone is talking about, where exactly are they located? Can I see them without taking stuff apart?

Any way to test the advance on the pump?

Does the overheating point to anything inpiticular?

Thanks again.

Install a 30 psi gauge in the intake manifold and load the engine by driving it down the road up a hill or in the field....report back the results....should be 17 psi give or take a little under load at 2400 rpm.

If your temp. gauge says its hot and you have coolant coming out the overflow you should check to make shure that the fins are not full of Dirt,Beans,Weed seed, etc.,check to make shure that the cooling system is full,If the Radiator is plugged inside you may be able to back flush on the tractor with a garden hose hooked to  the bottom spout, you would have to make adapters for that,If its hard lime though that may not work, also check the thermostat.I have seen machinery that have plugged radiators run fine under light loads then gradually overheat when really put to work. Good Luck!!

Has the tractor been sitting a while? My 7060 set for about 3 months when i went to get it it started and idled fine. When i hit the road with it, it would barely get out of its own way and smoked like a train. After a mile or so the turbo freed up and it was back to normal. The compressor side of the turbo is aluminum and will corrode stopping the fins from turning (hence the smoke because of lack of air).

10lbs of boost.   I would say you charge air cooler is shot.  Dont forget to replace all clamps a and hoses for the boost side

Blown intake manifold gasket to the cylinder head ...   look above the starter and you may see gasket pieces sticking out.

...and check all the manifold to cyl head bolts above the starter area and I'll bet they are loose...9/16" socket.

As you suspected, the intake manifold gasket is shot, along with 1 bolt missing, 3 loose!

I have the manifold off, what else do I need to do or check while it's off?

Where is the plug that is notorious for coming out?

Any tips or recomondations would be great!

Thanks for guiding me in the right direction! I was convinced it was the pump/injectors! Thanks again for the great input and great site!

You won't believe the difference when you ge tit fixed, my 8050 is set 10% over stock and it pulls our 235 Disk in low 5 at 2100rpms and it is not even beginning to work.  Report back!

I hope you're right.
This is my first big tractor and, needless to say, I was pretty disapionted when I couldn't pull a 20' disk!
Hopefully after the repair I can pull my 8 knife sidedress bar with no problems(and a lot less fuel!)
Thanks again.

my 7010 was the same way, looked like i was in a tractor pull with all the smoke, with no power. found it was the turbo, it was turning fine, but the housing had rusted thru. couldn't see it on the tractor, but after taking it off, that's when we saw the problem. still need a new turbo. i have never seen a turbo housing on anything rust thru!! was the cast iron part. and this tractor has always been stored inside!
