I'm looking at buying (cheap) a 5040 with a worn out engine. I found the parts no problem. My question, can this engine be rebuilt in the chassis? (new sleeves/pistons)

I've rebuilt gas engines before but never a diesel....and never re-sleeved a block.

Thanks,
Mike

If you have or can borrow a sleeve puller you can get sleeves out with the engine in.  For the cost and trouble of doing a rebuild I'd go all the way and get the crank machined as well as the cam bearings changed, I tried to go cheap on my Dad's C and we ended up having to get new bearings for the mains anyway, I thought they looked good, machinist said otherwise.

Thanks Dave, makes sense  on crank and cam bearings. Did you do anything to the head?

Yeah, I pulled everything apart and cleaned it, new valves, springs and guides, spent a few hours with the old valves and some lapping compound to make sure the new valves seated okay.  we should get the crank back tomorrow, it was expensive, but once it's broken in it will hopefully outlast me.
