Hey there, I have an Allis Chalmers 160, and she has been a good girl for an extremely long time. I had a steering issue, which took me a little time (6 months to deal with) but was resolved, I had my power steering pump rebuilt. Then about a week ago I did have a hydraulic leak, big one, in the rear, one of the hydraulic lines ends broke and I lost a whole bunch of hydraulic fluid and noticed only after my loader was not lifting. I corrected that problem, and added some fluid, but did not have maybe enough at first. I did add to full, the 3 pt hitch goes up and down 100% I thought at first it was my pump, but I saw the rear 3-pt hitch went up and down and then when I loosened the bleed valve on top of the pump oil sprayed out, so now I am going to say the pump is working, and pumping fluid 100%. I also heard a noise before it stopped working - the noise was something I never heard before. The engine was cold, when I started it up and it revved up a little and then I head a whirring whine that grew louder so I turned off the engine. I restarted and the noise went away for a bit then slowly it came back. Then finally it stopped completely and my loader would not go up any more. I heard the noise coming from this spot I believe. Can someone please tell me what part this may be called? Does it have something to do with controlling the hydraulic flow?  |

| That is your steering motor. Those went into use when the companies went away from solid(shaft) links. |

Hi there, yes but that's not my tractor, my tractor is not as clean as this photo! Then I guess that's not the part, because I can steer no problem. I need help to determine what part has failed on me, I heard a whine before it failed. What are the main components of the hydraulic system? I know my pump works, because I can lower and raise my pto, and I opened the bleed valve at the pump and it went spraying everywhere. So hydraulic pressure I have, When I try to raise the loader I get nothing, but the valves will let it drop. What would make a whirring winding noise and then stop making that noise completely - at the same time stopping the flow in to the cylinders? Not the valves, they are holding. Any help would really be of assistance. |

Hello, I believe it may be the control valve. Are there any parts in the control valve that could make a noise like a whirring noise then it stopped completely - lost lift. Are there spinning parts that could have gone in the control valve? Thanks in advance. |

The only way to know what your hydraulic pressure is, is to check it with a gauge. Just because a set of empty 3 point arms go up, doesn't mean you have the pressure to lift a loader. Thank you Sir, i will test the pressure I found the manual !! Hurray! My dad brought them up from his filing cabinet - thank goodness he saves everything for me. In my disbelief I found that it says to use 10W30! !!For the last 10 years I've been using hydraulic fluid. My my... Perhaps when it went dry when the line broke, the thinner hydraulic fluid couldn't keep the pump alive especially when it went dry for a short time. I checked the link also thank you. So I think you may be right, the sound could have been coming from the pump it happened fast and I did not want to keep it running. Need to test the pressure should be 2300-2400psi at 800 - 1000 rpm. So happy I found the manuals, my dad took the time 15 years ago to photo copy and save everything - even have the serial number and serial of the engine. So you may be right, I tried pushing down on the the 3 pt hitch, and it seemed to go down a bit with my human strength, that should not happen - I think you are right, I will confirm, that makes sense, thanks. Hi there, I tried standing on the 3-pt hitch and I weigh about 190lbs and it lifted me like it was nothing, I am not even getting a little bit of anything when I try the levers. I think the pump works, it raised me up 3 feet, I am going to ask my other son to stand on one arm and I will stand on the other and see if it can lift almost 350. If it can lift 350 on the 3 pt hitch, I am assuming it should at least push a little on the loader no? Does the 1 hydraulic pump service the 3 pt hitch also? As I am getting nothing on the loader side. I did see that from the pump it goes to another part with a nut on the end, before it goes in to the control valve, that might be my problem. Need to look it up, do you know what that part is? |

Okay, the 3 pt hitch uses a different pump than the front loader. The front loader has a pump that is powered off the crank shaft and the pump sits right behind the battery. I easily took the pump out and will have it either rebuilt or find a new one. The rear 3 pt hitch uses the pump that runs off by the alternator, this pump is fine. Take care. |
