Why is it that a brand new set of +20 thou rod bearings are around 6 - 7 thou THINNER than an old set of +10 thou ones I've just pulled out of the scrap bin???????????

One or the other was mismarked. One of those details I gripe about all the time. Measure every part before installing.
(Brand new parts should not need to be measured) (Ya, Right) as you just found out.

Dick L, what should be the correct thickness for a new rod bearing, and the mains as well, if I've got the correct figures, I can work out the rest. Many Thanks.

I am not dick but why would you be concerned with overall thicknes of bearings . The rod with the bearing in it and  the bottom cap torqued should be .002 larger than the rod journal . If thats right you put it on the rod journal and with a feeler gauge you make sure you have some side clearance between the rod and the crank jornal throw .  for the oem guys the book says .004-.007 side clearance. you know you shim between the rod and rod cap unless you had them machined so that you dont use shims right.
